The Leonid meteor shower is best viewed from a dark location and therefore light from the Moon can be distracting. Typically, in complete darkness in rural areas where the sky is mostly clear, 10-15 meteors can be seen within an hour during the peak of the meteor shower.
This year, the number of meteors will likely only be single digits. The Leonid meteor shower also typically features some of the fastest streaking meteors, which can travel at speeds of 71 kilometers per second.
According to Earthsky, the best time to observe the phenomenon is before dawn after the moon has set. If you can, go out of town where the city lights won’t drown out the stars and where it’s darkest so you can get the best possible view of the meteor shower.
The Leonid meteor shower is also known for producing meteor storms after certain intervals. However, scientists did not expect such an event. A meteor shower is called a storm when it sees more than 1,000 meteors per hour. Leonid has typically produced a hurricane every 33 years since 1833, but that’s not certain.
According to the United States Institute of Aeronautics and Space or NASA, to enjoy a meteor show falling in the sky, you need to do several things. First, go away from the light pollution of the city and find a place that has a view of the clear and cloudless night sky.
Second, be patient and pay attention for at least 30 minutes. Bring a chair reclining to be more comfortable looking up at the night sky and looking for meteor Rain. “Thirdly, clothing that is appropriate for cold night temperatures, which means bringing a jacket, gloves, and blanket.”
