The number of infections is the highest daily number registered in Norway since the pandemic broke out.

The previous record was set on 1 November, then in 1973, figures from the National Institute of Public Health show.

In the last seven days, an average of 1467 corona infections have been registered per day. The corresponding average seven days ago was 1098, so the trend is rising sharply.

400 of the new cases of infection have been registered in Oslo.

187 admitted

On Tuesday, 187 corona patients were hospitalized, eleven fewer than the day before.

45 of the patients are in the intensive care unit, and among them 19 are on a respirator. There are four fewer on intensive care and two fewer on respirator compared with the day before, according to the Norwegian Directorate of Health’s overview.

Guldvog recommends new measures

Health director Bjørn Guldvog announced on Tuesday that he will recommend new national corona measures due to the rising infection rates and increasing pressure on the health service.

– Now we see that the curves are at full speed upwards. It will in a short time affect the planned activity in the hospital and affect many other patients. Therefore, it is necessary to go through the entire chain of measures and see if we can not adjust it a bit, says Guldvog.

He emphasizes that it is not a question of going back to closure as it was, but rather that there will be some measures that can prevent us from getting so much infection.

Of possible measures, Guldvog mentions several random samples at the border and measures against unvaccinated health personnel who have patient contact.

Kjerkol will follow up on action measures

Minister of Health Ingvild Kjerkol said on Tuesday that she will quickly take a position on advice on new national corona measures if they come.

– We have given an assignment to our agencies to continuously assess the need for regional and national measures. If we receive recommendations on this, we will quickly take a position on it, says Kjerkol to NTB.

She says that the Ministry of Health is following the situation closely with the Norwegian Directorate of Health and the National Institute of Public Health

The Conservatives believe that Kjerkol should be fast.

Leader of the health and care committee in the Storting, Tone Wilhelmsen Trøen from the Conservative Party, tells NTB that the signal from the director of health about measures for unvaccinated health personnel comes at a high time.

– I hope that the Minister of Health considers the advice that comes quickly and put in place measures, says Trøen.

220,000 are confirmed infection

A total of 220,513 people have tested positive in this country since the pandemic started.

A total of 924 corona-infected people have died in Norway since March 2020, preliminary figures show. Whether patients have died of or with covid-19 is not always possible to establish.

22 of the dead were under 50 years of age.
