Würzburg. The winner of the architecture competition “Cooperative living with vision and perspective on Hubland” has been determined. All competition designs can be seen from November 15th in the Würzburg town hall.

“Hetterich Architekten BDA” from Würzburg won the architecture competition with a design for the development of an approximately 8,000 square meter plot of land on Hubland. The subject of the competition was the planning of approx. 140 residential units in the new “Hubland” district of Würzburg. Half of the apartments are to be funded by the Free State of Bavaria in order to create inexpensive living space here.
“Quality very high”
The three Würzburg housing companies St. Bruno-Werk eG, Heimathilfe Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft eG and Kronprinz-Rupprecht-von-Bayern-Stiftung jointly awarded it. In addition to the first prize, two more were awarded. On the one hand to Georg Redelbach Architects, Marktheidenfeld in cooperation with Bruno Fioretti Marquez Architects, Berlin and to the office of Stefan Forster, qualified engineer architects from Frankfurt am Main. “Overall, the quality of the designs was very high,” agree Frank Hermann, managing director of the St. Bruno-Werk and Wolfgang Heck, managing director of Heimathilfe and director of the foundation.
An expert jury chaired by the Munich architect and urban planner Prof. Dr. Thomas Jocher checked the seven submitted proposals in an anonymous process. Hetterich Architects had submitted a design that best implemented the requirements of the housing company. A design for approx. 140 apartments on four to six floors in several buildings as well as one or two underground garages was requested. An energy standard for KfW 55 was required for all apartments. The architectural offices were asked to take into account both ecological aspects such as sustainability and climate-neutral energy supply, as well as social aspects such as accessibility, children’s playgrounds and an attractive outdoor area design.

The design by Hetterich Architects provides for a rhythmic arrangement of punctiform, five-story buildings and four-story, elongated bars. There are a total of eight buildings with a total of 148 one to five-room apartments. The topographical conditions were cleverly used to enable the underground car park to be accessed without large ramp exits. The stairwells are on the north side so that the living spaces can be well lit. The green and open spaces facing the street as well as the play areas for small children close to the apartment were also rated positively.
Green flat roofs
Photovoltaic systems are planned on the green flat roofs. In the next step, the building application is submitted, the start of construction is still planned for 2022. The competition designs can be seen from Monday, November 15 through Thursday, November 25, in the upper foyer of the Würzburg town hall.
