The Iron Dome is able to intercept certain projectiles whose speed is lower than that of sound
The US military is testing Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system on the Pacific Island of Guam, concerned about possible Chinese attacks, reported Tuesday. Wall Street Journal.
The Iron Dome missile shield, in service for about a decade, intercepted most of the rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
According to tests carried out by the US military last August in New Mexico, however, it may be less effective against Chinese cruise missiles, the newspaper said.
It nevertheless remains capable of intercepting certain projectiles whose speed is lower than that of sound, and the United States is pursuing separate plans to strengthen its defenses against possible Chinese attacks, the American daily said.
According to a Pentagon report on the Chinese military released last week, Beijing is currently working on a major effort to modernize its weaponry, with weapons capable of neutralizing U.S. warships in the event of regional conflict.
The Pentagon cites the DF-21D missile with a range of over 1,500 kilometers, “capable of carrying out precision long-range strikes against vessels, including aircraft carriers operating in the western Pacific, from mainland China.” .
The Chinese army deployed these missiles during exercises, “an unambiguous message sent to world and regional opinions”, according to American admiral Philip Davidson.
