15 minutes. A Florida man pleaded guilty Tuesday to defrauding the state of California out of $ 10 million in tobacco taxes.
Akrum Alrahib, 43, a former California resident currently living in Miami, admitted to conspiring to commit mail fraud.
Between 2016 and 2017, Alrahib distributed duty-free tobacco products such as cigars, chewing tobacco and tobacco leaves to individuals and businesses in California.
According to federal prosecutors, the man did these deals knowing that the products would later be sold illegally.
The tax rate during that period increased from 27.30% to 65.08%.
