On November 7, 2017, our colleague Stephanie Verbraekel (28) died a few meters from her apartment in Schaerbeek in Brussels. She was hit by a car driver driving 90 km/h where the limit was 50 km and a few meters from a zone 30. The man was sentenced to 250 hours of community service.
After her death, the action group Heroes for Zero was founded and in February 2020 became the memorial’I left my feathers there‘ revealed. It is a symbol for all Brussels traffic victims and was designed by Jean-François D’Or, a local resident and well-known designer. ‘As a local resident, the collision affected me deeply. There is still a lot of speed here,” D’Or said at the time. “When I was asked to make a memorial for Stephanie here, I immediately said yes.”
On Bruzz told Heroes for Zero that the Haachtsesteenweg, the street where Stephanie died, is still not safe enough. “Progress has been made since the accident, but there is still racing on that axle,” Pieter Fannes told the Brussels news website. ‘A few weeks ago there was another crash near the Poggeplein.’
Heroes for Zero wants more speed traps and better zebra crossing security.
