The number of corona infections is increasing at a rapid pace, also among vaccinated people. More and more people are also in hospitals who have had an injection. For some, this is reason to question the reliability of the vaccines. “Nonsense”, says virologist Ab Osterhaus. “Those are the numbers when you vaccinate so many people.”
According to the latest figures from the crownedhboard 84.1 percent of the Dutch population has now been fully vaccinated. Osterhaus emphasizes that the vaccines still work well. “They work for more than 94 percent against hospitalization,” he says in Good morning Netherlands on NPO 1. “But if you vaccinate 15, 16 million people and there are a few percent of people who do not respond well to that vaccination, they eventually end up in hospital.” to the hospital.”
The percentage of fully vaccinated corona patients has steadily increased since the summer. That increase was much larger in October than in the preceding months. For example, the share of vaccinated in hospital was still 27 percent in September, and rose to 44 percent a month later.
‘If you didn’t vaccinate it would be an explosion’
As more people are vaccinated, proportionately more vaccinees will end up in hospital. “That could be because they are very old,” explains Osterhaus. It is known, for example, that the vaccine works slightly less well in the elderly than in young people. For example, vaccinated people who are now hospitalized are much older (77 years) than the unvaccinated (59 years), writes the US.
“It could also be because they have an immune disorder,” Osterhaus continues, “but it also happens that ordinary, normal people are not completely 100 percent protected. If you take that very large group together, you will also get people who have been vaccinated in the hospital,” says the virologist. “If you didn’t vaccinate it would be an explosion.”
