Historic: British Airways and Virgin Atlantic side by side to New York

In the past flight number BA1 was used by Concorde, which also flew between Heathrow and JFK. It was later taken over by the A318 flight from London City to JFK, but that route was closed during the corona crisis.

Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic will deploy the Airbus A350-1000 to New York on Monday. The British Airways aircraft was using runway 27R, while the Virgin Atlantic aircraft took off from parallel runway 27L at the same time.

Typically at Heathrow, which has two runways, one is used for take-off and the other for landing. An exception was made for the festive event. “After more than 600 days, now is the time to celebrate the reopening of the UK-US borders. We have put our rivalry aside for a while, while taking off at the same time to celebrate the importance of the air link,” said British Airways chief executive Sean Doyle. “It’s a time of celebration, not rivalry,” Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss agrees.

Anyone who wants to fly from Europe to the US must not only be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but also be able to show a negative test result. Anyone who does not meet those requirements is not welcome for the time being.
