From today, license plate cameras will register whether light-moped riders are riding on the road within the ring and wearing a helmet. Failure to do so risks a fine. The trial will last at least a year.

“The fact that moped riders ride on the road contributes to a liveable and carefree city with fewer accidents,” said alderman Egbert de Vries (Traffic) about the measure. “Unfortunately, compliance with this measure has decreased recently. It is therefore important to give enforcement an extra boost.”
Scooters have been required to drive on the roadway since 2019. However, a recent poll shows that only 54 percent of drivers adhere to the helmet requirement and driving on the roadway. Last year it was 76 percent.
“By using fixed and later also mobile cameras in the city, we can enforce very efficiently,” says De Vries. At the moment only the existing license plate cameras are used. At a later time, there will also be cameras that are mobile and can therefore be moved.
