The vaccine doses made are mainly distributed to low-income countries around the world, including India. Poonawalla estimates that more than 50 percent of the world’s babies depend on vaccines made at SII.

Appeara COVID-19 on earth, forced Adar to spend hundreds of millions of dollars into its manufacturing facility in India, and committed to making millions of doses of a Corona virus vaccine that was at the time unproven.

The vaccine, made by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca (AZN), was still in clinical trials. No one is sure how long the vaccine will take, let alone whether it will work.

“It was a calculated risk. But I didn’t see a choice at the time, to be honest. I just feel sorry I didn’t do it one way or another,” Adar told CNN International.

SII also plans to provide vaccines to hundreds of millions of Indians and poor countries.
