Germany’s top consumer advocate has spoken out in favor of relieving the burden on consumers with the high gasoline and diesel prices. “With a view to the high petrol and diesel prices, it is important to create a socially fair balance for consumers,” said Klaus Müller, board member of the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv), the newspapers of the Funke media group according to the preliminary report. A fair compensation would be possible through income-independent mobility allowance. In contrast to the commuter break, the proposal would relieve all income groups equally.
With a view to the approaching winter, Müller called for a quick compensation for the high energy prices. “Nobody should have to freeze in winter,” said Müller. “Gas barriers must be suspended.” In addition, in view of the high energy costs, Müller spoke out in favor of an increase in housing benefits, unemployment benefits, basic old-age security and an electricity price reform.
At the weekend, CSU boss Markus Söder spoke out in favor of a temporary reduction in VAT on fuels. He also wants to cap industrial electricity prices.
