Covid-19. Which cities in Nord – Pas-de-Calais are the most affected by the rebound of the epidemic?

We are not yet talking about fifth wave but the data are worrying. The resurgence of the Covid-19 epidemic which touches the country at the beginning of November 2021 does not spare the North and, to a lesser extent, the Pas-de-Calais.

Which cities and populations are most affected by this rebound of the coronavirus? Here’s what the numbers say *.

Incidence, hospitalizations… These worrying figures

Why are we talking about a resurgence of the epidemic? Just because the virus is circulating more and more. This is particularly the case in the North.

In the department, the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants rose from 39 to 6 October, to 80 to 3 November.

In Pas-de-Calais, this increase is also present. The incidence there rose from 20 on October 6 to 45 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on November 3. The department is getting closer the alert threshold set at 50.

This acceleration in the circulation of Covid-19 is starting to be felt in hospitals. The number of coronavirus patients hospitalized in the North is increasing: from 210 patients on October 27, to 235 on November 3.

Ditto in Pas-de-Calais, but in a more moderate way: 115 Covid patients hospitalized on November 3 against 108 a week earlier.

This increase also concerns the services of intensive care. The number of Covid patients hospitalized in critical care has increased from 43 to 58 in one week in the North. In Pas-de-Calais, the situation is rather stable with a dozen patients in intensive care.

Which municipalities are the most affected in Nord – Pas-de-Calais?

Without surprise, the Lille metropolis is particularly affected. The incidence there fell from 55 at the beginning of October, to 94 on November 3.

There are also towns where the virus circulates much more actively. In the North, several border municipalities (Willems, Baisieux or Bachy for example) have incidence rates between 250 and 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In its last epidemiological bulletin, Santé Publique France mentioned as a possible explanation the proximity to the Belgium where the epidemic is starting again.

In Pas-de-Calais, the circulation of the virus is not equal according to the territories. We note, without much surprise, that these are the large agglomerations Arras, Lens, Béthune and Saint-Omer who are most affected. We also see larger sills on the coast, around the Touquet and of Calais.

Who are the most affected populations?

The men are, as since the start of the epidemic, more affected by this rebound of the coronavirus. They thus represent around 55% of patients hospitalized for Covid in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais.

In the North, men represent the majority of patients with severe form of the virus. 72% of Covid patients admitted to intensive care are men.

Regarding the circulation of the virus, it is not surprising that the most affected age groups are people aged 20 to 49. More specifically, the 30-39 age group is the most affected segment with an incidence rate of 121 per 100,000 in the North (62 in Pas-de-Calais).

We also note that children are more affected than seniors, with incidence rates around 75 among young people from 0 to 19 years old.

However, it is the seniors who suffer the most serious forms of Covid since they still represent the majority of hospitalized patients.

New measures to come?

Faced with this resurgence of the epidemic, some sanitary measures will be back on Monday, November 8 in the North, such as wearing a mask at school.

In addition, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron is due to speak Tuesday at 8 p.m. to address the health situation in particular. Is a new turn of the screw to be expected to avoid a new wave before the end of the year celebrations?
