It’s been a while since we last heard about the new Fable, which Microsoft unveiled in July 2020. The game is currently in the cauldron of developer Playground Games, the maker of Forza Horizon 5, among others, but we still know very little about it. A release date is also missing, but at least we now know approximately how long the game has been in development. Lead engineer Tom Golton says on Twitter that he has been working on the new RPG for four years now.
You can take that as positive news; it also regularly happens that a game is already revealed while development has only just started, but that is not the case with Fable. Probably. A grain of salt wouldn’t go amiss; such game development takes place in several phases, and you don’t know in which phase it is now, let alone how long the total process will take. But there is a good chance that we will at least get to see more of Fable next E3.
It is also striking that the development of the new Fable started not so long after Lionhead Studios closed. In 2016, Microsoft canceled the game Fable Legends, and in April of that year also the maker of the Fable franchise. But it didn’t take long before the focus turned to a new Fable, this time with Playground Games at the helm.
