Terence Wilson, a founding member of the UB40 reggae group, died at the age of 64. Fans know this under the stage name Astro. He was to perform at a concert in Prague next year.
Terence Wilson left UB40 in 2013 to form a new UB40 band featuring Ali Campbell and Astro. This year the band played several concerts. Next year, she was going on tour, which was to include a concert in Prague. The group reported the sad news on Saturday.
“We are completely overwhelmed and completely broken when we have to tell you that our beloved Astro died after a very short illness. The world will not be the same without him,” the band said on Twitter.
The original reggae group UB40 broke through in the early 80’s. The hits Red Red Wine and I Can´t Help Falling In Love were especially successful. The band sold 70 million records and in their songs they dealt mainly with social and political problems.
“We found it harder to write love songs than militant lyrics because it was much easier to write about things we witnessed or read about. It seemed natural to us,” Astro explained some time ago.
The current composition of the band UB40 also paid tribute to the deceased singer. “We have heard the sad news that former UB40 member Terence Wilson, better known as Astro, has died after a short illness. Sincere condolences to the family,” the group said.
Brian Travers, who was also a founding member of the band UB40, also died at the age of 62 in August this year.
