Trains canceled again today due to ProRail staff shortage

Railway manager ProRail has been struggling with problems with staff shortages among air traffic controllers for some time, and today other problems are also being added to the track: a rail has also been broken that urgently needs to be repaired.

As a result, there will be no train traffic between Utrecht and Arnhem from Saturday, November 6, from 11:00 PM to Sunday, November 7, 3:00 PM. Train passengers between Maarn and Rhenen and between Barneveld Center and Ede Wageningen are also experiencing a lot of inconvenience from the problems at ProRail. There are no trains on those routes until 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Shortage of air traffic controllers

The shortage of traffic controllers has been a problem for ProRail for some time. For this reason, trains are often forced to be removed from the timetable. According to the rail manager, this has so far mainly happened during the holiday periods.

“We try to scan nationally where it is necessary to deploy people in the short term, but that is simply not always possible,” a spokesperson said in a response. “That is of course very annoying.”

The railway manager expects to have ‘solved as much as possible’ the staff shortage by 2023. ProRail has asked pensioners and former employees, among others, to fill in temporarily when there are gaps, the spokesperson said.
