León scores and secures direct place in postseason in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Nov 6 (Reuters) – León became the third club to reach the quarterfinals of the Grita México A21 tournament on Saturday by beating Necaxa 3-0 with a triplet by Chilean Víctor Dávila.

With his victory, León reached 29 points to place himself in third place overall, below América and Atlas, who are also already installed in the so-called “Fiesta Grande” of Mexican soccer.

The clubs that occupy the first four places in the general table at the end of the 17 days of the regular season have direct access to the quarterfinals.

The teams that occupy places 5 to 12 go to the repechage where they will face a single match, and the four winners will relocate to places 5 to 8, according to their position in the table, to play the quarterfinals.

In the match of the seventeenth and final day, Dávila scored his first goal in the 21st minute with a left-footed shot inside the area after controlling a pass from Fernando Navarro.

Dávila scored his second goal in the 52nd minute when he swept into the small area to finish off a cross from Ecuadorian Ángel Mena.

The Chilean registered his triplet in the 72nd minute with a shot in the area behind the center of Colombian Omar Fernández from the left sector.

Later the matches between América-Monterrey, Tigres UANL-Bravos Juárez and Tijuana-Pachuca will be played.

The regular season will end on Sunday when reigning champion Cruz Azul visits Pumas UNAM and Santos Laguna will rival Atlético de San Luis.

On Friday, Guadalajara won 1-0 on the road to Mazatlán and secured a spot in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Puebla also secured a place in the playoffs after beating Toluca 1-0, which was already in that area.

At the start of the day, Atlas qualified directly to the quarterfinals on Thursday after beating Querétaro 2-0.
