The 227m John Lewis-class ship will be christened USNS Harvey Milk on Saturday, November 6

Harvey Milk became the first openly gay politician in the United States to win a public election.

The US Navy tanker is named after gay rights activist Harvey Milk, who was killed about 40 years ago. This is stated in the press release Navy released Friday 5 November.

“Leaders like Harvey Milk have taught us that diversity of backgrounds and experiences contributes to the strength and determination of our nation. There is no doubt that future sailors on board this ship will be inspired by Milk’s life and legacy,” read the press release words of Minister Carlos Del Toro.

The 227m John Lewis-class ship will be christened USNS Harvey Milk on Saturday, November 6, at a ceremony in San Diego. The speech will be delivered by Harvey Milk’s nephew, co-founder of his Stuart Milk Foundation.

Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco City Council in 1977, becoming the first openly gay politician in the United States to win a public election. Milk, who came from a family of sailors and served as a naval officer during the Korean War, was killed in 1978. The story of his life was filmed in 2008 by director Gus Van Sant, starring Sean Penn.

Recall this year openly gay became a minister for the first time in the United States… Pete Buttigieg is a US Navy veteran who served in Afghanistan, was mayor of Southband, Indiana, and vied with Joe Biden in the Democratic primary.
