If you are one of the people who get up early during the week, but like to sleep on the weekend, pay attention. According to doctors, even this seemingly harmless habit affects not only the quality of sleep, but also life. It is one of the bad habits that can lead to chronic insomnia. And she is very dangerous.
Some have trouble falling asleep and staring at the ceiling for a few hours every night, others wake up at night and some people can’t sleep for more than a few hours. Insomnia manifests itself in various ways. Experts agree that People need to spend six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep on a regular basis. According to them, it is not possible to regenerate body and mind in three or four hours.
If sleep problems are not resolved, they can turn into chronic insomnia. This worsens not only the quality of life of patients, but it is also dangerous because the body is very depleted. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t sleep at night and is alert the next day. Insomnia is one of the problems that needs to be treated, otherwise patients are at risk of psychological and physical consequences due to long-term fatigue,” points out Stanislav Konštacký of the Society of General Medicine (SVL).
If a doctor rules out that insomnia is the cause of another disease, he says it is appropriate promote quality sleep by building appropriate habits.
Even getting up on the weekends is important
People should, for example wake up every day at the same time regardless of whether it is a work day or a weekend. Doctors on the contrary do not recommend napping during the daybecause it can impair the quality of night sleep. In the evening, people should devote to things that reassure them, a leave troubleshooting until the next day. “The bed is used for sleep and intimate life. Work, quarrels and watching TV do not belong in the bedroom. If we experience states of anxiety in bed, for example from work, we will most likely disrupt sleep, “warns Konštacký.
According to him, 30 to 50% of people currently suffer from insomnia and about a tenth of them develop into a chronic disease. “We know from the latest studies that the problem of sleep has increased by 10% in recent years, and the consumption of hypnotics, which are most often prescribed for the treatment of insomnia, is growing similarly rapidly,” Konštacký points out.
Causes of insomnia according to doctors related primarily with an accelerating pace of life, increasing average age populace a s irregular sleep and wakefulness. “It’s not enough to simply dissuade a patient by prescribing him sleeping pills, which in some cases can even be addictive. The cause of the problem needs to be identified.”
It is said that 90% of chronic insomnia in adults can be inappropriate distribution of mental and physical stress during the day. The remaining 10% do not sleep due to physical or mental illness.
In a number of patients, insomnia occurred during the coronavirus epidemic, which doctors attribute mainly to the fact that their workload changed dramatically. “Physical stress has decreased and, on the contrary, mental tension has increased significantly. Insomnia can also be caused by covid-19 – but when the so – called pocovid symptoms disappear, it is difficult to determine, “explains Konštacký.
According to Konštacký, residents of developed countries, especially women, are more prone to sleep disorders. Insomnia significantly impairs the quality of life and can lead to a number of health complications. How to discover its cause and determine the appropriate treatment will be discussed by general practitioners at this year’s XL. annual conference of the Society of General Medicine (SVL) ČLS JEP.
