WhatsApp and Instagram are now called differently

The Facebook parent company Meta has renamed WhatsApp and Instagram faster than expected. So far, the new suffix “from Meta” instead of “from Facebook” could only be seen in the beta versions. But since the latest updates, it also appears in the official versions when opening the two apps. The normal Facebook app has also already been adapted. And while previously only the name suffix “from Facebook” could be seen, the new meta logo is now also included. Its color is even adapted to the respective app.

Due to the new name affix, WhatsApp is now officially called “WhatsApp from Meta” and no longer “WhatsApp from Facebook”:

Realignment

The background to the changes is the realignment of the Facebook group, which has been called Meta since last week. With the new name, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wants to direct the focus to the new virtual environment “Metaverse”, in which he sees the future of digital communication – and also of his company.

He also wants to use it to lead the group more strongly out of the shadow of its original and so far most important platform Facebook. “We are seen today as a social media company, but at heart we are a company that connects people,” said Zuckerberg. The name Facebook was no longer able to reflect the entire range of products offered by the group.

Critics see the renaming as merely a diversionary maneuver. In the past few weeks, Facebook has come under great pressure from internal documents made public by a former employee. Frances Haugen appears as a whistleblower and accuses Facebook of putting profits above the well-being of its users.
