Thick smog blanketed much of northern China on Friday. This incident was added to the visibility in some areas of less than 200 meters, quoted from Straits Times, Friday (5/11/2021).
The pollution that occurred Friday morning was monitored by the United States (US) embassy in Beijing. It said the incident was “very unhealthy” for the general population.
In addition, the level of small particles or PM 2.5 is well above the WHO recommended limit of 15. These particles penetrate deep into the human lungs and cause respiratory disease.
According to Beijing authorities, this pollution is due to unfavorable weather conditions and the regional spread of pollution. This is when schools are being asked to stop sporting and outdoor activities.
According to city officials, it is possible the smog will still persist until Saturday night.
