779 castaways rescued in one night : this is the assessment that the maritime prefecture draws, this Thursday, November 4. Many attempts to cross the Channel took place during the night from Tuesday 2 to Wednesday 3 November last in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, due to favorable weather conditions.
The prefecture counts 22 interventions, which mobilized 9 boats and 2 helicopters. The rescued migrants were taken care of by the emergency services and the border police.
Two deaths in less than 24 hours
This Thursday, November 4 morning, a migrant was discovered dead on a beach in Wissant, in Pas-de-Calais. Two others were nearby, in good condition “severe hypothermia”. They were taken to hospital. A small boat filled with water was found nearby.
The day before, Wednesday November 3, the rescuers were unable to resuscitate a man recovered from his boat. He was declared deceased upon returning to the dock. Another migrant was reported missing after falling overboard.
