Mathematics often presents problems that are difficult to solve. Even ‘new numbers’ sometimes have to be created, for example imaginary numbers.
So complicated, people are often taught that the square root of a negative number is ‘doesn’t exist‘alias’ does not exist ’, and this was also believed by old mathematicians.

But in 1572, a member named Rafael Bombelli made a breakthrough. ‘What if, we just wanted to pretend that the square root of this negative number doesn’t exist? The gamble paid off. Bombelli not only discovered how to solve cubic equations, but he also discovered what we now know as imaginary numbers.
“Schrödinger plugged the square root of minus one into the equation, and it suddenly made sense … the Schrödinger equation correctly explains everything we know about atomic behavior. It is the basis of all chemistry and most of physics. And the square root of minus one means that nature works with complex numbers and not with real numbers,” said legendary physicist Freeman Dyson, quoted in a video on YouTube Veritasium.
