The video recordings from the Leipzig hotel that Gil Ofarim wanted to check into at the beginning of October have been discussed for weeks. Was the musician insulted anti-Semitically or not? And did he wear his Star of David necklace or not? BRISANT presented the material from the surveillance cameras from the hotel to the two multimedia forensic experts Thomas Gloe and Jakob Hasse. Using Gil Ofarim’s Instagram video, the experts, who are very familiar with the evaluation of image material, try to analyze the details in the surveillance video.

Hardly any details due to poor video quality
It quickly becomes clear that the quality of the recordings is so poor that details are difficult to see. The experts cannot rule out wearing or not wearing a chain with the Star of David. “On the basis of the current investigation that we have carried out, we cannot make any statement as to whether the chain actually existed or not,” says Thomas Gloe.

Experts cannot commit themselves
And further: It is easy to say that if the chain is not recognizable, it has not been worn. “However, it must be shown more precisely whether the chain should have been visible in the video material if it was worn.” Answering this question with certainty is difficult, said Gloe.

Clarity by re-enacting the scene?
That has to do with the quality of the material, with the quality of the lighting situation, with the strong compression, with the resolution of the camera’s lens, Gloe continues. All of this leads to the fact that the star cannot be seen in individual situations of the surveillance recordings and then in individual situations. A final statement about wearing the chain can only be made by re-enacting the scene at the original location under comparable conditions.

Prosecutor continues to investigate
The singer Gil Ofarim published a video on Instagram in October in which he raised anti-Semitism allegations against an employee of a Leipzig hotel. The employee is said to have asked Ofarim to remove his chain with the Star of David. The prosecutor’s investigation into the case is ongoing.
