The disadvantage of hydrogen is that it does not just occur in nature. So we have to produce it ourselves and that requires a lot of energy. Where should that energy come from? “Today, almost all hydrogen in the world is produced with fossil fuels and that is not good, because that has a huge CO2 footprint,” says the professor.
“In the future, people will mainly be looking at so-called “green hydrogen”, which is produced by electrolysis of water. This is a process that is powered by green electricity, for example from sun and wind. If you produce it in this way, you get a really clean fuel.
