The New Generation of Latinos Entering NYC City Council | Your Political City New York

This diversity would coincide with the nearly 29% of New York City’s population that identifies as Hispanic or Latino, according to 2020 Census figures. Many of these new legislators are younger and more progressive than their predecessors, and they push issues such as criminal justice reform, tenant rights, racial and economic equity, among other issues. This will undoubtedly present a stark contrast to the somewhat centrist (and sometimes conservative) position of the next mayor, Eric Adams. In addition, most of the new councilors are women, a broader trend that was observed in local elections and that will mean, for the first time in history, a female majority on the City Council.
