COP26: promises from world leaders against deforestation and methane emissions

World leaders pass the baton to national delegations at COP26. They have ten days to shape the details of their final commitments.

The host of the Glasgow rendezvous, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was “cautiously optimistic” on the final success of the summit:

“We must be careful to protect ourselves from false hopes and not in any way think that the job is done because it is not. There is still a long way to go. My message to negotiators is very simple: the world’s leaders may have Gone or are leaving the COP now, but I can tell you that the eyes of the world are on you and the eyes of the British Government and all other governments are watching our negotiators. “

Against deforestation and methane emissions

In the first two days of COP26 there has been a flurry of announcements, giving a sense of progress.

The first of the two key commitments, called “put an end to the great chainsaw massacre”, promoted by Johnson, is supported by more than 100 countries, including Brazil. Their commitment: end and reverse deforestation by 2030.

A similar number of countries have supported a joint initiative by the European Union and the United States to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. However, the largest emitters – Russia, China and India – are not among those countries.

On the other hand, more than 40 leaders committed to promoting the adoption of low-carbon technologies.

Now, it is the national negotiators who are in charge of discussing the details of a climate agreement. They must convince all UN member states to back the climate promises and how to finance them.

Environmental activists at the foot of the canyon

Their movements will be closely followed by environmental activists, who are still fighting for the planet in the Scottish city of Glasgow.
