REVIEW: Rihards Lībietis “Lines and Miniatures”

The second original music album of guitarist and music author Rihards Lībiets includes ten instrumental compositions, which are ideologically similar to the musician’s “RL Elektronix” released in 2015.

“The music included in the album is wide, stylistically unified, but with separate flash moments. It describes the events and feelings of the last year – especially loneliness, uncertainty about the future and uncertainty. At the same time, we tried to create the compositions in such a way that they provide the listeners with a recharging and inspiring charge of emotions, which, however, is not intrusive, but is felt and permeates all the compositions of the album, ”says Rihards. While writing his new compositions, he was inspired by post-rock and film music, especially by composers Thomas Newman, Oulavur Arnalds and Tony Anderson.

Initially, this was intended as a solo album, in which various guitars would be performed only by Rihards Lībietis, however, the music required more space and shades, therefore drummer Toms Kagainis has played drums and created various sound effects in several compositions. The recording has also been enriched by other guest artists – Erna Daugaviete (cello), Olga Bučinska (violin), Ieva Rūtentāle (flute), Matīss Repsis (piano) and Beāte Zviedre (voice). The album was recorded in the studio “No Fuss Audio” in Tukums, as well as in the “AMFO Music” studio in Riga. The album is called “Lines and Miniatures” because they are all around and permeate our lives and daily lives. The lines are both clearly visible, such as score lines, power lines, and so on, and can only be guessed by the slow and gradual opening of, for example, a person’s way of life. Each piece is also like a small miniature – an adventure with a story that the listener can feel, get to know and enjoy in a few minutes. The themes of lines and miniatures also appear in various ways in the titles of several of the tracks on the album, such as “Transmit Parallels”, “Switches”, “Heart Line”, “Whisper Miniature” and others. “

About Rihards Lībietis. He is a musician and music author who regularly performs and collaborates with various Latvian artists and groups, as well as the founder of the quintet “Rihards Lībietis Orchestra”, the author of the performed music, as well as the producer and publisher of all the group’s albums. Rihards also composes music for theater performances, contemporary dance performances, as well as short films and other events, including the performances of the choreographer and director Kristīne Brīniņa “Survive Children” (2021) and the performance-walk “Upe” (2020) created for the festival “Liepāja Art Forum”. which is included in the repertoire of Liepaja Theater, also “Death of Bannija Manro” (2017) and “Expelled” (2014) at Daile Theater, etc.

THROUGH. Aivars Hermanis, Harijs Zariņš and Ainars Virga once ruled the throne of Latvian guitarists, later the generation of Mārčs Auziņš and Kaspars Zemītis came, but now the next ones are present, of which Gints Smukais and Rihards Lībietis immediately come to mind as the brightest representatives. “Lines and Miniatures” is an unobtrusive proof of Richard’s mastery, which can easily be grasped by an ear not trained in guitar. The most elegant compositions appear together with “Matis Reps” “Loose Thread” and the album’s introductory “Splitting”, as well as “Cross Parallels”. It should also be mentioned that Erna Daugaviete’s cello suits Rihards’ music very well – at least in the compositions “Pattern of Life” and “Border Edge”. If Richard’s goal was, according to himself, “to create compositions in such a way that they give the listeners a charge of inspiring and inspiring emotions”, then this goal has been achieved.

PRICE. “Whisper Miniature” with the participation of Beata Sweden does not read – the instrumental line had to be kept to the end.
