Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
President China Xi Jinping reportedly unable to access to speech via video at the UN High Level Conference on climate change COP26. Xi can only give his official statement in writing.
“As far as I know, the conference organizers did not provide video access,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Wenbin.
It was reported that Xi would not attend COP26 in person. This information was conveyed by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
“It’s pretty clear now that Xi will not be coming (to COP26) and the Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) has been notified in advance,” said one of The Times’ sources, quoted by Reuters.
“What we don’t know now is what attitude China will take.”
Xi Jinping’s decision is quite unfortunate, considering that China is a country with the largest carbon emissions in the world.
Meanwhile, climate observers consider China’s action to symbolize that the country no longer has new commitments that it wants to propose to deal with global climate problems.
However, China plans to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels to below 20 percent by 2060. This plan is contained in a cabinet document published by local state media.
However, the document does not specify the steps the Chinese government will take to decarbonise or reduce carbon emissions.
The implementation of COP26 itself has generated expectations, as well as fears. Although in this meeting various countries will strengthen their commitments in dealing with climate issues, there is still a possibility that this meeting will fail.
Previously, Johnson stated that COP26 could potentially fail. He assessed that this possibility arises because countries have not provided sufficient targets to control the increase in Earth’s temperature to keep it below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
“The countries most responsible for past and present emissions are still not taking appropriate action,” Johnson said The Guardian.
“If we want to prevent COP26 from failing, then that (emission reduction target) must change, and I stress, if the meeting in Glasgow fails then everything will fail. The Paris Agreement will be destroyed in the first minute,” he added.
