To keep an eye on the RS virus, RIVM and Nivel work together in a European network. Several European health organizations and laboratories are exchanging data on the spread of the RS virus, Nivel reports in an online message.
–
The network is part of a European research project: PROMISE. PROMISE stands for ‘Preparing for RSV Immunization and Surveillance in Europe’. The PROMISE project is funded by the European Commission through the Innovative Medicines Initiative, a public-private funding. UMC Utrecht will be the third Dutch partner to conduct clinical research into the RS virus. The project officially started yesterday.
Facts
The organizations involved in the network will share data about the spread of the RS virus with each other. This is done in collaboration with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The health organizations are also looking for optimal methods to be able to detect and investigate the RS virus in the laboratory.
To inform
Thanks to the exchange of data, the virus can be closely monitored. As a result, hospitals and policymakers can be informed early about a possible new RS virus epidemic.
