The number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients increases by 21%; morbidity decreases by 2% / Article

The SPKC reported that an average of 175 people a day were hospitalized last week. The number of severe patients in hospitals has also increased by 25%, reaching 191 patients.

The SPKC noted that it was too early to draw any conclusions about the stabilization of the situation with regard to the 2% reduction in morbidity. “Monitoring of at least a week or two is needed to assess the evolution of the situation. It should be noted that the previous two weeks did not include full school screening, which also affected the number of Covid-19 detected,” the SPKC told the media.

When resuming 1-3. The number of tests performed increased, the average number of tests performed per day was 22,217 (previously 17,515), while the average number of new cases per day was 2,375 (previously 2,422).

Of all the tests performed, 36% (55,333 tests) were related to screening in educational institutions, and 64% (100,185 tests) were related to the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 6% (1,009 infected) were related to educational screening and 94% (15,557 infected) to the general public.

The reproductive rate (R) of Covid-19 infection decreased slightly to 0.97 last week (1.12 a week earlier), indicating a slight decrease in the prevalence of infectious disease in the community.

Assessing last week’s cases of Covid-19 and assessing the vaccination status of infected people, 11,909 people had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed a course of vaccination, representing a total of 72% of all cases last week, and 4,657 were vaccinated. 28% of all patients last week. Comparing the prevalence of infection per 100,000 population among vaccinated and unvaccinated / partially vaccinated people, Covid-19 infection was 2.4 times more common in unvaccinated and partially vaccinated people in Latvia than in fully vaccinated people.

The SPCC recalls that as the number of vaccinees increases and the prevalence of Covid-19 infection continues to predominate among non-vaccinated individuals, the overall incidence of vaccinated human infections will increase. However, among vaccinated people, the disease is usually milder and requires less hospitalization, so the proportion of vaccinated and infected people should always be seen in the context of the number of prevented Covid-19 cases in the general population.

The European average of 14 days of cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population is rising to 235.5 (190.2 a week earlier). The 14-day cumulative rate of Covid-19 morbidity per 100 thousand inhabitants in Latvia is currently 1640.6 (a week ago – 1256.8). In Estonia, the indicator has increased and reached 1353.4 during the past week (a week earlier – 1086.6). The indicator in Lithuania has increased to 1320.3 (a week ago – 1163.3). During the 38th to 43rd week, the patients most often came to Latvia from Turkey (95 cases), Russia (45), Belarus (36), Ukraine (23), Italy (26), Georgia (25), Ukraine (25), Germany (21), Estonia (19), Great Britain (18).
