US President Joe Biden was “disappointed” by the lack of ambition on the part of China and Russia in the fight against climate change at the G20 in Rome, which concluded this Sunday with a timid agreement on this matter.

“Russia and China have just not shown up” when it came to “making commitments on the climate,” Biden said at a press conference after the end of the summit in the Italian capital, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, participated by videoconference.

“I also find it disappointing,” Biden said of Saudi Arabia’s role, while the rest of the G20 great powers “made compromises at all levels.”

Responsible for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions, the G20 nations, including Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, reached a timid agreement on climate change this Sunday, ahead of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), in Glasgow.

“I am leaving Rome with my hopes unsatisfied,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres acknowledged on Twitter.

The G20 leaders pledged in Rome to limit global warming to 1.5ºC compared to the pre-industrial era and to reduce the use of coal, but failed to set a precise date for carbon neutrality.

China and Russia said they will be able to reach carbon neutrality by 2060, while Italy and the United States were betting on setting 2050 as the deadline.
