When the MacBook Pro 2021 was released, its notch got pretty hot. But many of you may have assumed that a notch means FaceID technology; but you’re wrong, the latest notebook uses Touch ID. The notch seems like a brand decision, especially with rumors that the next MacBook Air will also have one.
However, anyone would assume that FaceID implementation was inevitable, given the large notch size and the fact that it is a more convenient technology. However, Apple has an entirely different reason for choosing Touch ID.
FaceID could work better on MacBooks
Joanna Stern interviewed some Apple executives for her review of the MacBook Pro and was told that Touch ID is a more convenient option because users always have their hands on the keyboard. Yes! You read that right.
People who have used Windows Hello face recognition technology on laptops would know how convenient it would be to have Face ID for the MacBook Pro. It might even be a better option on a laptop than on the iPhone. On an iPhone, you still need to swipe up to access apps after unlocking it with FaceID. Also, Face ID does not work properly if the phone is on a flat surface.
Apple Justifying The Ugly Notch
Laptops will not face these problems with face recognition technology. With facial recognition, the machine would be unlocked the moment the user was ready to use it. Also, the first thing people look for when using a PC is not the keyboard but the mouse. These first world issues aside, most people find any kind of biometric authentication overkill on laptops and are better off with a password.
Apple has tried to justify the big notch as well. Shruti Haldea – product line manager for the Mac Pro – talked about the new machines in the Same Brain podcast. She said the new MacBook Pro occupies a 16-inch diagonal active area and users still get a “16:10-inch window.” It says that users get more space for their content and the notch is hidden for the same size on its precursors in full-screen mode.
