G20 State Leaders Meeting in Rome Only Ends in trite

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The meeting of the leaders of the G20 countries in Rome, Italy closed with a joint statement. One of the warmest is the commitment of each country in efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

But unfortunately, the commitment looks like mere trite, because there is nothing concrete in it. For example, to agree that 2050 can achieve ‘zero’ carbon emissions.

“We recognize that the impact of climate change at 1.5°C is much lower than at 2°C. Keeping 1.5°C within reach will require meaningful and effective action and commitment from all countries,” the document reads. Reuters, Sunday (31/10/2021).

The meetings that took place for days were indeed quite tough. It is hoped that this issue can be continued and produce something more concrete at the United Nations High Level Conference (UN Summit) in Scotland.

Experts from the United Nations said that the world is now heading for a global warming of 2.7 degrees Celsius. The time that is considered the most appropriate limit is 2050. China said it would only be able to in 2060. Meanwhile, India and Russia could not even set a time for their commitment. Likewise with a row of other countries.
