As in many editions of a major competition, there is often a small thumb in the last square. The Copa America is no exception to the rule since we often end up with unexpected semi-finals.
In 2011, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela created the surprise.
In 2015, Paraguay and Peru again reached the semi-finals.
In 2016, he’s a guest, the USA, which created a surprise by reaching the semi-finals.
In 2019, it’s Peru who almost achieved the feat by reaching the final (3-1 defeat against Brazil).
Peru, more of a surprise?
This year, we will have at least one surprise again because among the posters of the quarterfinals there is a Peru – Paraguay. If Paraguay is given favorite by the Bookmakers, Peru showed a very good face at the start of the competition by beating Colombia 2-1 and hanging Ecuador 2-2 when they lost 2-0 at half-time. In addition, the Peruvians were able to show that they appreciated this competition by reaching the semi-finals 3 times in the last 4 editions. It would no longer be a “surprise” to see them join the last four, but a confirmation that this nation is becoming a great country in South America.
In the other shocks of these quarter-finals, Brazil faces Chile, Uruguay faces Colombia and Argentina faces Ecuador. If Chile wins 2 of the last 3 editions, it would be a huge surprise to see them join the last four as Brazil appears to be the big favorite. Ecuador will also be seen as a huge surprise as Leo Messi’s Argentina is in full rebirth.
