« It is biologically certain that at some point a new virus will emerge and we will not be able to contain it. We can take action now to prepare for this virus, detect it and treat it quickly when it emerges.”, Announced the Director General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during a meeting with the Ministers of Finance and Health of the members of the G20 in Rome, Friday, October 29, 2021.
“I am convinced that when this meeting was scheduled we all hoped that the epidemic would end, but it is not over yet and this because of the Delta variant. Infections and deaths are on the rise again around the world, including many of your countries“, Added Ghebreyesus.
He stressed that “although vaccines save lives, they do not stop the transmission of the virus, and therefore each country must continue to use all tools, including health care and social measures with tests, treatments and vaccines ”.
He noted that the WHO and its partners on Friday released a new strategic plan and budget, which requires $ 23.4 billion to ensure the effectiveness of tests, treatments and vaccines.
He said that meeting the global immunization target set at 40% by the end of 2021 requires an additional 550 million doses of vaccine, and that volume can be produced in 10 days.
