JAKARTA – Climate change is becoming a big issue in the world today, as the COP26 (Conference of the Parties) meeting will soon be held.

The COP is an annual high-level forum for 197 countries to discuss climate change and how to prevent it.

After being hit hard by the Covid-19 virus, the world has bigger long-term problems. Namely, climate change. In fact, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that, “climate change is a global disaster whose impact is the same or even more dangerous than Covid-19,”.

Climate change is a process that has a negative impact on life on earth. The impact of climate change is damage to ecosystems, droughts, floods, food shortages, spread of disease, causing the melting of polar ice caps, to other natural disasters.

As the name implies, climate change causes significant changes in temperature, rainfall, and wind that last for a long time.

The impact felt in Indonesia was forest fires in 2015 due to a long dry season, even though Indonesia is known as a tropical forest that is always wet. The causes of climate change are very diverse. Starting from logging and burning forests, then greenhouse gases that can increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas also has an impact on climate change. Others, it’s marine pollution due to garbage, industrial agriculture, plantations, and livestock that use artificial fertilizers excessively, and many more.
