Women should have access to information about breast cancer: Codhem –

Within the framework of the month of awareness about breast cancer, the Human Rights Commission of the State of Mexico (Codhem), specifies that all women have the right to health, life and information to detect and prevent it, as well as access to medical services for its detection, diagnosis, treatment and care on a permanent basis.

Although this month was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote early detection and appropriate treatment, Codhem refers that the international body itself has indicated that “early diagnosis of the disease saves lives”, and protects the right to health and life of women, as well as the well-being of their families, hence the importance of informing, prevent and treat this cancer not only in October, but throughout the year.

What is it?

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among women in the world; on Mexico represents the leading cause of cancer death in those 25 years of age and older, whose number of cases increased alarmingly, mainly due to the delay in starting treatment, either due to the delay in seeking medical attention after presenting a possible symptom , or by the delay in the health system to give the definitive diagnosis.

Although each day more than 16.1 women die from breast cancer in Mexico, and the age group most affected is that of 50 to 69 years, as indicated by the CNational Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health (CNEGSR), This disease should not be associated with death, since most of those who are diagnosed in the early stages and receive adequate treatment achieve positive results. In this regard, Codhem indicates that it is vitally important to commit to the dissemination of timely information for all.

Early detection

The Ombudsman’s Office reiterates that the early detection of breast cancer is vital, so it asks to attend to medical recommendations: from the age of 20, every month to perform breast self-examination – a practice that must be taught by staff medical and nursing to know and recognize the warning signs-; From 25 years of age onwards, go to the Health Unit for a clinical breast examination; and between the ages of 40 and 69, request a mammogram at the corresponding Health Unit.
