Oļa Vasiljeva has been named the exhibition “Time Tips” in the gallery “427” (30.07. – 28.08.2021). “A small-format exhibition in which the literary, social and cultural references inherent in Ola Vasilyeva’s artistic practice are ingeniously and conceptually precisely expanded,” it is stated in the grounds for the nomination. “Vasilyeva’s favorite uncoloured remnants of bygone industrial design, textile rags and much more in this installation come together for the majestic Roly-Poly figure,” explains Kim? Zane Onckule, Program Director of the Center for Contemporary Art.
Elīna Vītols and Estonian artist Flo Kasearu have been nominated for the joint work “Cut” at the Eduards Smiļģis Theater Museum within the festival “Survival Kit 12” (03.09. – 31.10.2021). The “dirty linen” just washed in the turquoise basin is spread over the territory of the museum – a symbolic separation between the legal division of the Smiļģis Museum and its territory between the three owners (Riga municipality, the state and the descendants of Smiļģis). The “cut” here at the same time becomes a reference to the cut of a particular garment, an image created by cutting, a plane that seems to separate some separate parts. (..), ”evaluates the exhibition curator of the Latvian National Museum of Art Līna Birzaka-Priekule.
In total, experts nominated five visual art events during this period, and among them was the joint exhibition of Ieva Putniņa and Zane Hanele Putniņa “Who do you love more?” in the gallery “Smiļka” (27.08. – 10.09.2021), Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo’s work “Touch the Sun” in the group exhibition “Getting Closer to the Sun. Myths and Rituals ”at the art festival“ Cēsis 2021 ”(10.07. – 15.08.2021), Kristīne Krauze-Slucka’s solo exhibition“ Obedient Touch ”within the exhibition“ Digital Middle Ages ”of the Riga Photography Biennale“ Next 2021 ”(03.09. – 03.10.2021. ).
From January 1, 2021 to the end of December 2022, the exhibition curator of the Latvian National Museum of Art Līna Birzaka-Priekule, the curator and Kim? Zane Onckule, director of the Contemporary Art Center program, curator and art historian, Antra Priede, head of the Master’s program of the Latvian Academy of Arts, Vilnis Vējš, art critic, and philosopher Igors Gubenko. Nominees for the award are nominated quarterly. In accordance with the amendments to the Purvītis Award Regulations, since April 1, 2017, experts have been evaluating exhibitions only within Latvia.
The Purvītis Award is the largest and most prestigious award in the field of visual art in Latvia and is presented every two years. In 2021, the artist Amanda Ziemele became the winner of the seventh Purvītis Prize for the solo exhibition “Quantum Hair Implants”.
