The chances are therefore bad that the traffic jams will resolve this year. There is hope for recovery in February, with the Chinese New Year. During the holidays, factories and ports stand still in China, which usually seems like a new start for shipping. But even last year, that was not enough to get shipping back on track. The reason: the high demand did not allow the shipowners any break. “If demand does not normalize by spring 2022, if we do not see a significant decline,” says Rogers, “then the situation can drag on into the year after next.”
