Several readers of Aftenbladet contacted the media house on Friday after they observed a submarine moving both near Stavanger and in the fjord at Randaberg.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ivar Moen at the Armed Forces’ operational headquarters (FOH) outside Bodø, the boat belongs to one of our allies.

Confirms that the submarine is not Norwegian

– I can confirm that the boat is not Norwegian. It is from the Netherlands and goes by the name “Zeeleeuw”, says the spokesman for the Armed Forces.

– What does the boat do in Norwegian waters?

– This is a submarine that is regularly off the coast of our country. It is on a training cruise with us. This is allied training that our political authorities have a long way to go and that they want, he says.

– The submarine from the Dutch Navy, trains both to get to know along our long coastline, and to maintain an operational capability. This is part of an annual training program, to be equipped to come to the rescue if we should need outside help.
