Cabinet allocates 1.3 billion euros for children and ex-partners allowance scandal

The cabinet is counting on the previously promised compensation for the children and ex-partners in the allowance scandal will cost 1.3 billion euros. An amount has also been reserved for people who have been treated incorrectly by the tax authorities regarding other allowances.

This was announced by outgoing State Secretary Van Huffelen after the Council of Ministers. It takes over the amounts that the House of Representatives wanted to reserve for the children: a compensation of 2000 to 10,000 euros per person, depending on the personal circumstances. It is estimated that 95,000 children are involved.

An amount is also reserved for ex-partners of victims of the allowance affair. Some still experienced the adverse financial consequences after their divorce. 590 million euros is reserved for them. It is estimated that 7,000 to 9,800 people are involved.

For the estimated 22,000 victims of abuses with other allowances, such as the housing allowance, 76 million euros is reserved for compensation. Van Huffelen will discuss the details of the various compensation schemes with the House of Representatives.
