2.5 million euros recovered for exploiting sailors

Two directors and a manager of an employment agency in Werkendam have to pay back money they earned by exploiting Filipino sailors. That has been decided by the Court of Appeal in The Hague. In total, this amounts to just over 2.5 million euros.

The trio had previously been found guilty of exploitation. They had Filipino sailors in Dutch inland shipping work 85 hours a week. Overtime hours were not paid and they also received little or no food.

The two board members received july 2020 each sixteen months in prison, six of which are suspended, for, among other things, participation in a criminal organization. The manager was given a 62-hour community service order. They now have to repay 2.4 million, 90,000 and 18,200 euros respectively.
