Sony is renaming the PlayStation 5-specific sales figures, not just for the last quarter, but also for the console’s launch in November of last year, into recently released quarterly figures. Microsoft is buttoned up again and wants to talk about growth rates rather than concrete sales figures.
It became the PlayStation 5 Quarterly report (PDF) In the latest quarter ending September 30, 3.3 million copies were sold, generating revenue of about 2 1.2 billion. The total number of PlayStation 5s sold since its launch has increased to 13.4 million devices; a poor balance further prevents sales volume, but this also applies to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.
Xbox hardware grows 166 percent
Microsoft has announced that sales of the Xbox series will increase by 166 percent compared to the same period last year, but has not yet released specific sales figures for the new consoles. Unlike the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S is now available.
Only 200,000 PS4s sold
However, the PlayStation 4 will no longer play a role. They only sold about 200,000 copies, up from 1.5 million in the quarter a year ago, before the PlayStation 5.
Sale of games and additional content controller
Sony was able to convert almost 2.6 billion euros into software last quarter, which is significantly more than hardware. Only 3.213 million come from physical sports that are traditionally bought in stores. It is estimated that almost 1.1 billion are digitally acquired games, and 1.4 billion are derived from additional content such as DLC or game purchases.
Last quarter, a total of 76.4 million video games were purchased for PlayStation 4 and 5, of which only 7.6 million came directly from Sony. Thus, 68.8 million copies are allocated for third-party games.
Sony named 47.2 million PlayStation Plus subscribers last quarter, down from an all-time high of 400,000 in the fall of 2020. In total, there are currently 104 million active users on the PlayStation or PlayStation network.
