SC Heerenveen is through to the second round of the KNVB Cup, but it was not easy: the amateurs of AFC from Amsterdam defended themselves bravely (1-2). Despite the victory, Johnny Jansen, trainer of the Frisian club, is not happy with the game and the result.
“The objective of cup football is that you get further”, Jansen starts in conversation with Omrop Fryslân. “Certainly in the first half the pace was too slow, we didn’t move the ball fast enough and we were sloppy in our continuation. That makes it incredibly difficult for ourselves.”
“If you stick with it and can still pick up the pace, then you’re definitely going to get your opportunities, but if you’re too sloppy, you’re just going to have a hard time, because they make it very compact: there are a lot of people around the sixteen and that just makes it very difficult to play football through it.”
Henk Veerman, responsible for the equalizer, was surprised by the opposition. “AFC surprised by playing very good football and playing very forward. That made it quite difficult for us. They did well with a lot of speed and a sense of space.”
