(CNN Spanish) – Nicaraguan health authorities have been vaccinating children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 17 with doses of the Cuban-made vaccines Soberana and Abdala.

The vice president and government spokesperson, Rosario Murillo, said in her usual call to official media that they hope to vaccinate more than 1.3 million children between the ages of 2 and 11. According to Murilllo, on Monday 29,500 doses of Sovereign 02 were applied to people in that age group.

The authorities also plan to immunize more than 765,000 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17. This Tuesday, according to the vice president, 20,548 doses were applied to that group.

In early October, Nicaragua approved the emergency use of the Abdala and Soberana vaccines, which are not authorized for emergency use by the World Health Organization, but are applied in Cuba, Iran, Vietnam and Venezuela, apart from Nicaragua. .

Iset Medina, a doctor specializing in internal medicine, told CNN that the population went to the vaccination posts and that they saw stories of parents sharing photos of their vaccinated minor children on social media.
