In order to research old church registers from the diocese of Aachen, interested parties no longer have to appear in person in the diocesan archive. Around 400 books from 100 parishes can now be viewed digitally on the “Matricula” online platform.
The diocese announced on Tuesday. The books contain data on baptisms, first communions, confirmations, marriages and deaths. “Church registers are important sources that not only form the basis for researching one’s own family, but can also answer many other questions about historical topics,” said archive director Beate Sophie Fleck.
The offer is an important step “in order to enable people – no matter where they are – to find out more easily online in old church registers”, explained the Aachen Vicar General Andreas Frick.
“Matricula” has been around for more than ten years
According to the diocese, more books will be added to the online archive in the future. The prerequisite is an expired term of protection. This amounts to 120 years for baptisms.
The online platform “Matricula” has been around for more than ten years and is administered by the diocesan archive of Sankt Pölten. It includes church records from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Serbia and Slovenia.
