Controlling stress can help prevent breast cancer

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A surgeon who specializes in surgery from Padjadjaran University, dr. Miradz Hudaya M, SpB said controlling stress can be one of the efforts that can be done to prevent breast cancer.

“Stress management. High stress levels can cause your immune system to drop. Decreased immunity can activate the inflammatory process, inhibiting cancer cell death. So, live by controlling stress,” he said in an interview talk show N’PURE titled “Together We Fight! Breast Cancer Awareness” which was held online, Tuesday.

Miradz who is a member of the Indonesian Surgeon Association (IKABI) said other cancer prevention efforts that can be done are implementing a healthy diet, especially low in cholesterol and sugar, diligently exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight or avoiding obesity.

According to him, an unhealthy lifestyle plus not breastfeeding, undergoing hormonal therapy and breast implants, old age and having had a benign lump are a number of risk factors for breast cancer that account for up to 80 percent of the chance. While the remaining 20 percent comes from genetics.

In addition to prevention efforts, early detection through breast self-examination (BSE) 7-10 days after menstruation is also recommended.

If someone finds a lump or a sign that points to cancer, you should immediately follow up with a clinical breast examination (SADANIS) to find other signs of the breast as early as possible so that action can be taken as soon as possible.

“USGs, mammography provide an overview, biopsies for tissue examination by an anatomist specialist,” said Miradz who had found cancer patients at the age of about 35 years.

He said, the nature of cancer can grow at any time, easy to recur and spread, so BSE, SADANIS and re-examination, for example, every 6 months is important.

“Never be afraid to go to the doctor for a check-up. Be curious about what’s out there. Early detection is better, it’s better outcome-his. Many of the patients who come are at an advanced stage. Fear, (lack of) knowledge and no pain. So, when he was sick, he came,” said MIradz.

The Ministry of Health has also long advised to consult a doctor immediately if someone finds the slightest lump in the breast, because delaying means giving cancer cells a chance to grow and reducing the patient’s chance to recover.
