Hamburg (dpa / lno) – The University of Hamburg is deciding this week who will succeed University President Prof. Dieter Lenzen in the coming year. At the end of the selection process that began in February with the job advertisement, a public hearing of the now only candidate is on the program on Thursday, as the university announced on Monday. The Academic Senate then withdrew to vote.
On Friday the university council had the floor and had to confirm the election. After that, the new president will only receive his employment contract if the Senate of the Hanseatic City also appoints him in a final step. With more than 40,000 students, the University of Hamburg is one of the largest universities in Germany.
Prof. Lenzen’s second term of office – he came to the Hanseatic City from the Free University of Berlin in 2010 – officially ends on February 28, 2022. The greatest success of the 73-year-old educational scientist is the appointment of the university as a “University of Excellence” in 2019. Also during his term of office, even if Prof. Lenzen was not involved, the Physics Nobel Prize fell for Klaus Hasselmann, who turned 90 on Monday and, among other things, taught as a professor at the Institute for Geophysics.
It is not yet officially known who will succeed Lenzen. According to a report by the “Hamburger Abendblatt”, the Academic Senate is said to have proposed the Vice President for Studies and Teaching of the Free University of Berlin and Professor for Biological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, Hauke Heekeren. The 50-year-old is well connected, has management experience and has also earned a high reputation as the person responsible for university teaching, the paper wrote.
