The best-selling car in Europe is the electric car for the first time

Tesla Model 3, as the most affordable car of the California carmaker, replaces Dacia Sandero, who was the best-selling car on the old continent a month earlier.

A total of 964,800 cars were sold in Europe in September. The second Renault Clio recorded a year-on-year decline of 23% to 18,264 units. The third and already mentioned Dacia Sandero fell by 9% to 17,988 units compared to last September. The long-term leader in the European market, Volkswagen Golf, fell by 39 percent year on year to 17,507 registered units.

Of the battery electric cars, the Model 3 was also ranked behind the Model 3 by Tesla, and the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback finished in third place.

“The strong performance of the Model 3 can be partly explained by intense sales pressure from Tesla at the end of the quarter,” said JATO, adding that September has traditionally been a strong month for the American carmaker in the European market. The instability of production due to the chip crisis certainly speaks into the market statistics.

The pleasing numbers for Tesla come as they await the final approval of their first large European factory called the gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin. CEO Elon Musk hopes that the factory will start production this year despite a slow approval process by the German authorities. He became more complicated again.

The Brandenburg Regional Ministry of the Environment said last week that an online public consultation for local citizens to raise objections to the factory’s impact on the environment would be repeated. He justified this by fears that the process was not in accordance with the regulations.
