Presidential elections in Uzbekistan

Voting took place at a traditionally high turnout. According to media reports, the re-election of the current head of state, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is expected.

Presidential elections were held in Uzbekistan on October 24. As reported by the agency TASS, by the closure of polling stations at 20.00 local time, the turnout exceeded 80%.

Five candidates are running for the post of head of state, including incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, nominated by the most influential Liberal Democratic Party in the republic.

His rivals are the Deputy Head of the Political Council of the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan Maksud Vorisova, the leader of the Social Democratic Party Justice (Justice) Bahrom Abdukhalimov, Alisher Kodirov from the Democratic Party Milliy tiklanish (National Revival) and Narzullo Oblomuradov from the Ecological Party.

There are no exit polls in Uzbekistan, and preliminary election results are expected on the morning of October 25.

As reported DW with reference to the AFP agency, observers are confident in re-election for a second term of the current head of state Mirziyoyev, since real opposition candidates did not participate in the elections.

About a thousand foreign observers followed the electoral process. On the whole, the elections were held in a calm atmosphere, but cases of “family voting” were recorded at a number of polling stations.

Deputy Chairman of the CEC of Uzbekistan Bahrom Kuchkarov noted that despite extensive explanatory work, it was not possible to completely suppress the negative practice when one voter brings passports of family members and votes for them.

Recall that Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected president in 2016 after the death of Islam Karimov. Prior to that, he headed regional and regional administrations three times, was a member of parliament and twice served as prime minister.
